Hard Surface Guide

In this project based Substance Painter for beginners tutorial, I walk you thru step by step on how to texture a model which I will provide.

First we begin by looking at Substance Painter’s interface and navigation. Then we will take at look a layers, masking and how they work within Substance Painter.

We take a look smart materials and reverse engineer them to see what each effect does. Then we build our own smart materials, add edge wear and dirt generators, stamp custom alphas and finish the project by rendering in I-ray.

At the end of this tutorial you will have a good understating on how to use Substance Painter even if you are a beginner.

If question/problem with this. Acute angles (peaks) are exposed and should be worn away, but obtuse angles (valleys) are protected so they should be worn away. So the outside of the “ears” are good, but the part where the ears meet the “head” shouldn’t have much wear because they’re protected by the rest of the body. So…. how do you change that? Masks?

Made a box in max. Unwrapped it, followed the video. But the edge generator did not map to the edges, it just spread out on the box.

At first with the intro I was like "mmh gonna be a nice tuto but He's almost yelling in the mic, gonna almost quit".
Glad I didn't ! GREAT overview to explain the workflow.
Question for the hardsurface stuff. Is it worth it to mod the hard surface parts myself on the highpoly then bake the normal map or ignore that and add details with SubPainter with some hardsurface brushes ? The time you win by doing that is big.

Great tutorial for industry people who just wanna dive in. We already know what alphas are just need to know how to use them! You're great inspiration for generalists who don't need to know every detail of a single program, but instead like dipping between a variety of packages. Keep it up.
