This is a time-lapse showing my process of creating a realistic 3D character from a sphere. The likeness sculpt is of Benedict Wong as Kublai Khan from the popular Netflix Marco Polo series. It’s quite a long process so I’ve broken the video into serveral smaller parts.

Sculpting and modeling was mostly done in Zbrush using a variety of techniques like dynamesh, zremesher, topology brush, zspheres, etc.
The character was created from scratch using a sphere so no base meshes whatsoever were used.

There will be no voice-over in the videos as they are screen recordings while I worked on the 3D character, but I do hope you can pick up something that can help you on your next project while watching my 3D character creation process.

The finished character can be view on my Artstation – https://www.artstation.com/artwork/ba82qn

The number of details the nails ALONE possess really blew my mind. I kept thinking you could not possibly add any more details and you did. And the result is absolutely stunning. Amazing work!
