Fusion 360 can convert STL mesh files to bREP solid bodies. Use the Insert Mesh tool, which allows STL, OBJ, and 3MF mesh files.

Once inserted, Mesh files can be converted with the Convert Mesh feature. Converting an STL to a Mesh with Fusion 360 is now streamlined. Fusion 360’s new mesh tools allow you to convert as a Faceted or Prismatic option. Prismatic will provide phenomenal results that are similar to a native Fusion 360 file or an imported STEP file.

well…it seems the educational license DOES let you do the prismatic…. though i also still have no clue what im doing and so far it seems like its 1000x easier just to pull it into 3ds max and edit it as a mesh or poly. i was hoping to try playing with parametrics, but it seems like its really really complicated to convert and is gonna provide a same, or possibly more restrictive result… maybe im just misunderstanding it though.

Any ideas please? I get as far as selecting the mesh after clicking covert, but it doesn't allow me to select it. It's a simple STL model made on blender. It's exports okay there are no holes so it's fully manifold as blender puts it. It just won't allow me to select the model for conversion.

It would be helpful for you to continue from the faceted method so that those of us hobbyists can learn to modify STL that do not have a Fusion 360 subscription. Thank you in advance.

@ProductDesignOnline I'm following your video here to a T and for what ever reason I keep getting alarms. Any chance we could chat on one of the social media platforms and possible help figure out what is going on. Working on a job and I'm stuck. 2nd OP is killing me.

OK, now do a video on why 3MF puts you at a disadvantage.
    From this discussion:
1: STL's are already human readable, and it was disengenuous of Kevin to show the binary file. The binary file of XML would look the same.
2: Fusion gets to track who is making money off their designs because it contains metadata.
    3: Other software can't import 3MF's.
4: Did I mention failed prints? That makes it far worse than STL.
5: Fusion 360 took away yet another feature of great software. That always seems to be a problem with proprietary stuff that makes a hobby version.
Kevin, you weren't asked to shill for this stuff by Fusion 360 marketing department, were you?

I REALLY don't like this new method. I prefer the old Mesh to BRep. Every single time I've tried this new method, I end up with a Surface Body instead of a Solid Body, which is useless!

"Prismatic option not available in the free or personal license"…then this video is a waste of time for many as the Faceted model are difficult to work with and the entire reason to view this video (for me) was to find a better way to manipulate STL files to teach myself Fusion 360. Thanks Autodesk…. I'm sure you know users use Fusion 360 for STL file file work, so you cut off the path to be creative and only leave the door open for the frustrating way to work with the files. Also, why did the youtuber tease this then make all teh changes using a mode most people will probably not have access to?

I got excited, that i could finally get a object very nearly as if I'd imported a .STEP file; UNTIL Kevin says it's unavailable in my hobby version<sigh>. So, it's back to hours of deleting triangles. I guess we can't complain, since we're getting to use a powerful 3d cad program for nothing.

  • Simon Simpson

    November 16, 2021 - 1:52 am

The tutorial is excellent and very timely. It helped me personally enormously but fact that prismatic isn’t available on the free licence IMHO doesn’t make sense. I completely understand why it isn’t available but I’d have thought that the file size is enormously smaller to store and processing is less involved once it’s been converted. Therefore IMHO it would actually be sensible to allow it to go on the free licence esp if there are large numbers of STLs being stored in the translated form with thousands of triangles etc. I’m still very grateful to Autodesk for being able to use it etc. I’d be struggling royally without that. It’s just an observation.

Some say Blender and Fusion360 can't be directly compared.
    "Blender isn't a CAD system!"
Fusion360 capabilities are a subset of Blender, not the other way round.

    You want CAD in Blender?
    Free add-ons; TinyCAD, many others.
Can't find the functionality you wanted?
Write your own add-ons in Python.

Where is Fusion360 when it comes to rigid body simulations?
How well does it resolve soft-body collisions?
Can you validate the moment of inertia in a complex shape by simply 'dropping it' in a simulation?
How well does it handle fluids, smoke and fabrics?
How well does it render the parts that CAD built?
Where are the pretty pictures and animations of the simulations?
And can it edit the video clips together into a presentation for the Client?

Oops, that's right…a CAD system doesn't need to show you what the parts look like, or how they behave when exposed to gravity, or how the parts work together.
'CAD systems' are just an outgrowth of formalized engineering drawings!

Does the prismatic method make circles actually be circles with which joints can be aligned to their centre? When using the faceted conversion method, how can I get circular holes to be actual circles in the solid body, with centre points usable for joints?

If you guys are having any problems where after you convert your mesh into a Brep, it only acts as a SURFACE body instead of a SOLID body, here is the fix. After you convert it, and it is a surface body, go to the surface ribbon ( next to mesh ). Under modify, click stitch. Then select your object and hit OK. It should be a solid body now.

  • Terrance Roberts

    November 16, 2021 - 1:52 am

I dont know if it has changed – yet again – but I have a paid version of this and I had to do it a completly different way. FIrst I saved the project. Then I turned off the timeline history (as usual). I had to go to the very top (above the icons) and select MESH to go into the mesh workspace. Then I could go to modify / convert mesh / and do the conversion. Painful.

  • Steven Tufano

    November 16, 2021 - 1:52 am

Any Idea why when I do coverrt mesh I get Not all facegroups of the mesh body could be converted. The generated solid or surface body is not complete. Try a different method for conversion or adjust the face groups to correspond better to geometric features of the mesh.
